The Davis Odd Fellows’ Thursday Live! starts 2019 with funk band Joy & Madness on Thursday, Feb. 7.

“It’s a joyous get on the dance floor and get rid of the winter blues show,” said Juelie Roggli, chair of the Davis Odd Fellows Music and Concerts Committee.

The Odd Fellows Hall is at 415 Second St. in downtown Davis. The doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. All ages are welcome. Thursday Live! shows are free, but donations to support the musicians are encouraged.

An eight-piece soul and funk explosion out of Sacramento that could be described as Jamiroquai meets Fits and the Tantrums, Joy & Madness has been rocking stages all over the West Coast since its inception. Joy & Madness brings a modern classic pop sensibility to a new age of joyous funk and soul.

Joy & Madness began with five core members who met in a previous Sacramento project with roots in funk and soul music. With the addition of three more members, the band began experimenting with the beginnings of what would become the Joy & Madness sound: a raucous mix of raw energy, pulsing groove and juicy horn lines coloring tightly crafted songs.

Since then, they’ve shared the stage with performers as prolific as Tower of Power, Trombone Shorty and Collective Soul.

Frontman and vocalist Hans Eberbach brings so much freewheeling energy to the stage, he has literally broken right through the floorboards.

Focusing on Joy & Madness, Eberbach said, “We don’t play well-known cover songs as a rule, so it’s an amazing experience to see people go from sitting comfortably at a distance to throwing themselves into the fray after just a few songs. The band is a lot of fun, but for those who listen to lyrics, there is a lot being said about empathy, social equity, relationships, the state of America these days and more.

“We play around with electronic elements and we are constantly pushing to evolve our sound. It’s absolutely joyful and free, but hard-hitting and visceral, too. There’s a playfulness, a sexiness and a real deep soul humanity.”

Thursday Live! is sponsored by the Davis Odd Fellows Music Committee with the support of KDRT radio. It’s a continuous music series on the first Thursday of most months.
